Regarding the question ABC's Charlie Gibson asked Sarah Palin whether we'd be obligated to defend Georgia or the Ukraine if they were members of NATO and Russia attacked them...

One answer is, yes, we're obligated to help defend member countries if they're attacked by outside forces.

But the better answer is that admitting Georgia and the Ukraine to NATO makes it LESS likely they'd be attacked in the first place. Just as admitting (then) West Germany into NATO helped ensure that the (then) Soviet Union wouldn't attack, so too would admitting Georgia and the Ukraine into NATO change the current dynamic for Russia. Right now, they have no problem going after countries that can't stand up to the Russian military (i.e., Georgia of today), but just as we don't want to get into a war with Russia, Russia has no desire in getting into a shooting war with the United States.
