Obama probably had probably already booked tonight's appearance on the David Letterman show before the kerfuffle over 'lipstick' erupted, but if he was looking to make up the damage his comments did to his campaign, I would have advised him to appear on Leno instead.

Letterman viewers are pretty much in the Obama camp already, he doesn't have to worry that they'll be upset over his comments; if anything, they, like Keith Olbermann, think Obama hasn't gone far enough to attack McCain and Palin.

Leno has the undecideds, the ones who heard of Obama's comments and who could be mollified by an explanation. They are the voters Obama needs to reach and explain that he wasn't being a sexist pig (yeah, pun!). Only Obama didn't bother going to them, he went to his base.

Just another opportunity missed. Oh well.
