A much better way for Bush to have sent a signal to the Iranians that their antics were unwelcome would have been for him to have given the Navy rules of engagement that would have allowed - and led to - the Navy opening fire on the Iranian gun boats at the first sign of hostile intent.
The Iranians are a charter member of the Axis of Evil. They're responsible for the deaths of American servicemen in Iraq. They're pursuing nuclear weapons. They're not entitled to the benefit of the doubt and I don't know why Bush hasn't already authorized the Navy to take more aggressive action when confronted with evidence of Iranian troublemaking. |
