As for Mike Nifong, who was disbarred for his (mis)handling of the Duke Lacrosse (non)rape case: thank goodness he was incompetent.

There is no doubt that he screwed the three Duke students for political advantage, to help his re-election campaign. But he did so in such a clumsily and pathetic way that it wasn't going to take an F. Lee Bailey to figure things out. If Nifong had truly wanted to screw these kids, or, had he realized that he needed to really screw these kids if he didn't want to end up as he is, disbarred and facing financial ruin, then he needed to do a better job than he did. Exonerating evidence wasn't disclosed right away to the defense, as it should have been, but neither was it destroyed. Prosecution witnesses didn't lie. Evidence wasn't manufactured and planted at the scene. The alleged victim wasn't coached by the police and prosecutors to get her story consistent.

If Nifong had truly wanted to screw these kids, or, had he realized that he needed to really screw these kids if he didn't want to end up as he is, disbarred and facing financial ruin, then he needed to do a better job than he did.

Thank goodness he didn't.
