California's decision to sue carmakers, claiming that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have cost the state millions of dollars, is just one more example of idiocy run amok.
If there was justice in the universe, lightning would strike California Attorney General Bill Lockyear. But since that won't happen, GM, Ford, Toyota and friends will have to spend millions of dollars defending the lawsuit. Maybe they'll argue that California has no cause of action as the carmakers had complied with the emissions standards set by the state itself. Or maybe they'll argue that whatever costs California claims to have incurred as a result of auto emissions, the state has more than offset those costs by the benefits of automobile transit (what would happen to California's economy were cars and trucks to disappear from the roads one day?). For me, I'd love to see the automakers attack the suit head on and argue that there have been no costs incurred by auto emissions, that auto emissions are safe and that any money California has spent has been a result of California's 'chicken little' mentality when it comes to auto emissions, pollution and global warming... and, as such, California shouldn't be able to recover from the automakers the money that California was silly enough to have spent combatting the 'evils' of auto emissions.
