Now: Bush to conservatives: GO POUND SAND! The Bush White House has had 24+ hours to address the claims that the Border Patrol is giving the Mexican government the location of the MinuteMan patrols... and there's been nary a peep out of the White House... which means that Bush sees nothing wrong with what is going on. As I wrote yesterday, I suspect Bush views our dislike of his positions as evidence of a failing on our part, rather than indicative of him having made mistakes and needing to change course and do something different. He is on a mission and he's not going to let unhappy people - whether they be Democrats unhappy with any of the 100 things they don't like about him or conservatives unhappy with his immigration policies - detract him from doing what he knows must be done. And... in a way, we shouldn't be surprised. We watched Bush stand resolute in the face of intense partisan criticism from the Democrats over his tax cuts... and his invasion of Iraq... and his prosecuting the War on Terror. We know that he doesn't back down when he is sure he is right. We saw - and laughed at - the Democrats who went crazy in response to the things Bush was doing. We've seen him refuse to veto spending bills despite a huge cry from conservatives for him to do so. We watched him push a trillion dollar expansion of Medicare despite deep disgruntlement on our part. So why should we think he's going to change his spots on the issue of immigration and start doing things based on what other people want rather than what he thinks is right? The answer: we shouldn't. Wouldn't be prudent. Not going to happen. So just as the Democrats are looking to elect a whole lot more Democrats in order to serve as a brake on Bush, so too do conservatives need to elect as many conservatives as possible in order for them to act as a counter to Bush acting like the darn big government liberal that he is. Given how many people he is pissing off on so many issues, it's amazing that 31% of the public still approves of the job he is doing. Other than the likes of DJ Drummond, just who are they? I've got some bridges and vacation property to sell them. UPDATE: According to Andrew McCarthy, DHS is disputing the allegations. Whether they are or are not, I think the challenge for conservatives is the same: elect as many conservatives as possible in order to keep Bush from doing stupid things... |
