Lawhawkoffers up a defense of Trent Lott's widely ridiculed proposal to spend a ton of money moving a railroad that has just been rebuilt...

... which I don't buy. The problem is not, as Lawhawk suggests, that Lott has "become an ineffective advocate for his constituents' needs", nor do I agree that it is a good idea of spending $700 million to "improve infrastructure" if said infrastructure is NOT crumbling, full of potholes, a health hazard or a serious impediment to economic growth.

Look, there are a lot of things we could spend money on that would constitute an 'improvement' in our nation's infrastructure... but we can't afford to do all of them now.

And since we don't have the money to do everything, we need to prioritize our spending and focus on those items that are in the greatest need of being fixed and/or upgraded... and a rail line that has just been rebuilt - to the tune of some $250 million - is NOT something that needs to be upgraded now.... and not any time in the near future.
