Skimming through today's Washington Post, I came across these gems...

The editorial on Marion Barry's getting caught using cocaine, and while he was awaiting sentencing for tax evasion, in which the Post hopes that Barry can "overcome the demons within that drive his self-destructive behavior" (intalics mine). C'mon, guys, there are no 'demons' present... what we have, and what you refuse to admit, is a guy who very much enjoys what he is doing... repeatedly breaking the law and pretty much getting away with it. The fools in Ward 8 keep re-electing his to the City Council (something that should give pause to anybody wishing for the District to get full voting representation on Capitol Hill). The Post never washes their hands of him. He should be thrown into jail for as long as possible and forgotten as quickly as possible.

There's also the story of Richard White, the head of the DC-area Metro system, who is being forced out of the job he's held since 1996. Now, one would think that someone who was being forced out of a job - usually a sign of incompetence - would be shown the door and asked to not let it hit him on the way out. But, noooooo! The Metro system, despite its inability to operate anywhere near a self-sustaining level and recently blamed for mismanaging near $1 billion in rail car and escalator contracts, is giving him a goodbye present of "a cash payment of $238,000, continued health insurance and an annual pension of $116,000 for the rest of his life"... which, given that White is only 53 years old, ought to amount to millions of dollars before he kicks off. And, if you thought that was more than enough, you would be wrong, for upon his death, his spouse will receive $58,000 annually until she dies. Boy, I sure hope that if the day ever comes when I'm asked to leave the place I work that I get a package that rich. Just amazing...

In an sign of just shows how utterly clueless our supposed allies are, Germany, France and Britain announced that they want to refer Iran to the UN Security Council. As if the Mad Mullahs are trembling with fear that the UN Security Council would do anything sufficient to keep them from pursuing nuclear weapons.

And, in proof that you can bring Mohammed to the mountain but you can't get them to not kill themselves, at least 345 Muslim pilgrims were killed during the annual stampede during the hajj. One might think that if the people in the Middle East aren't smart enough to refrain from this self-destructive behavior, as well as the other stupid things they do on a pretty regular basis, that they aren't exactly the poster children for a pro-democracy push...
