I'm sure the writer of this letter to the editor sits on the other side of the aisle than I do, but she makes a very good point:

If the White House knew over a year ago that the NYT had the story on the NSA monitoring programs, and if the leak is as serious to national security as Bush claims it is, then why only now has the Justice Department opened an investigation into the leak?

Yes, the damage (assuming there is some) really took place once the NYT actually published the story. But it seems ridiculous to not pursue those leaking classified information just so long as no one prints their stories... does it?
