Deborah Howell, the Washington Post's ombudsman (ombudsperson?), has her response to last week's kerfuffle, in which she was attacked by Democrats for writing that Jack Abramoff gave money to both political parties...

In her column, she defends herself against the Lost Kosites charge that she is a "liar and Republican shill with salt for brains". She goes on and on about her long career in journalism, how no one is a more fervent believer in the First Amendment and she has spent her life working for "rational reporting and passionate and reasonable opinion" and how she is so distressed that the Post has to turn off the comments section to her columns.

But nowhere does she criticize those who attacked her. She doesn't talk about how liberals have gone so far off the reservation that they can't be trusted to maintain a civil dialogue. She fails to make any connection between the venom with which the liberals attacked her and their attacks on Alito, Bush, Cheney and anybody else who doesn't march in lockstep with their warped view of the world.

I'm sure that Howell had been quietly chuckling to herself over the past few years as she watched and read the liberals attack Bush and the GOP. She's probably bought Al Franken's screeds, laughs at Jon Stewart's wit each night, thought Bill Maher got a lousy deal and loved Fahrenheit 911. While she might have thought these attacks were a bit over the top, they were still all in all okay because, after all, it was the evil, lying and malicious Republicans whose ox was being gored.

But, now that you're on the receiving end of their viciousness, it ain't so funny anymore, is it, Deborah?
