shut down the Senate if the GOP goes ahead with its filibuster-busting plans...
It wasn't so long ago that the roles were reversed, with the GOP in the role of shutting down government because of squabbles with Clinton. Much to the GOP's surprise and chagrin, the public didn't care about the substance of the fight... all that mattered is that parks and government offices were closed and the GOP was to blame - and the GOP paid a price later on (it was pretty much the start of the end of the Gingrich Revolution). True, Clinton was much better at playing the blame game than the GOP ever will be able to, but it shouldn't matter in this case. The GOP should continue to show up, go about its business and let the nightly news show the Democrats refusal to show up. The Democrats could go on and on and on about how nasty the GOP was in changing the rules... but it won't matter to the public. All they'll see, all they'll care about is the Democrats holding up things over an issue that 9 out of 10 people couldn't explain in the first place...
