Not so fast, David...
According to Michelle Malkin, David Gergen attempts to cut Eason Jordan some slack by saying that "Jordan had just returned from Iraq and was 'caught up in the tension of what was happening there. It's a raw, emotional wound for him'.". Well, I'm no psychiatrist, nor do I play one on TV, but if Jordan was suffering from some kind of Iraq-related PTSD, wouldn't his actions/words/feelings be directed towards those he (subconsciously?) believed to be the source of his stress*? In other words, why would he say something critical of the US military unless he felt anger towards them? Notice Jordan didn't make comments (at least as far as has been reported) critical of the insurgents targeting journalists... which this post shows are responsible for a whole lot more deaths of journalists than the US military. If anything, if Gergen was right, that Jordan was suffering from the 'tension' of having been in Iraq, then what we're seeing is an indication of Jordan's deep feelings towards the US military. Maybe Jordan doesn't really believe the US military is 'targeting' journalists... maybe it's just that Jordan hates the military so much, he can't keep himself from saying things such as this. Which, if true, might be a bigger problem for him (and CNN) than if Jordan really did believe what he said. * Even Garry Trudeau, no fan of the Iraq conflict, understands the dynamic, as this strip illustrates... The character, having lost a leg in Iraq, feels animosity towards those resembling those he blames responsible.... and not the US military. |
